As many of you know I have gotten a Mosin Nagant. I will take pictures and post as soon as I finish my review latter in the week. Now here is the community project. I would like to build a budget sniper rifle out of it. but like life itself there are a few rules. the biggest rule is the gun can not be altered to the point of bot being able to put it back to its historical stock condition. so no cutting of the stock. or the barrel or in any way shape or form sporterising the fire arm. so lets hear those ideas. please try to include suppliers and prices if this is feasible with this fire arm and cheap enough it will be done.

I played the other day in 22 deg weather, and even with "Winter mix" paintballs I was getting hit with marbles.

I just can get enough of it though. Winterball is the epitomy of open play at the local field, only the seriously dedicated, seriously crazy, or D all of the above, play when its below freezing. It is a test of skill not only for the sport, but it has its survival practice usages too.

Can you move tactically in the cold without breaking a sweat (and causing hypothermia)? How is that knee when its below freezing? Is your tac gear (I use a good portion of it for paintball) warm enough without restricting movement? Can you camouflage yourself when the trees/brush are bare?

My woodsball team (now officially sponsored by our home field) are playing in a big New Years Scenario paintball game at our home field as a group of spec ops NPCs. With 500+ patrons that attend on New Years day, the 10 of us are in for some fun.

Well the first storm has hit us here in Michigan and dumped about 8 inches over night. The say 18-24 for my area of the state by Thursday Night.

Question is...

Are you ready for the storm?

In your vehicle I recommended a few things:

Blanket
Shovel (collapsible ones can be purchased at surplus stores or online)
Kitty Litter (a jug of the rock stuff, not clumping)
Flares (surplus stores, meijer, walmart, online)
Bright orange Garbage bag of flag (closed in the window can make your vehicle visible in white out conditions)
CB Radio (see my emergency cb post)
Cell Phone and Car charger (even without a contract or minutes by federal law you can still dial 911)
Granola or Energy Bars (never know how long you will be stuck, protein will help your body produce heat.)
Bottled water (open and pour out about a third, so then if it freezes it doesn't burst, can be thawed with car heater or body heat)
Tow Strap

At home:

Spare Blankets
A corded phone ( plugged into the wall jack corded phones still work when power is out)

As all know I am a true blue dye hard Ruger 10/22 fan. How ever I understand they are not the only game in town. I just got a new savager 64 for a incredible price. One that was way to good to pass up. It was free, I won it in a drawing from my local sporting goods store. To be honest I never would have bought one. After all I have 2 10/22's and I was not looking for more guns but hay free is free. Someday probably sooner then later my daughter will be having children so the gran kids can use this gun.

First of all let me start out by saying I love this gun. I would also like to say that the paper work involved in getting a new gun from a store in this day and age is a pain. Ive had most of my guns for many years and any of the newer ones came from private individuals. I had no idea of the paper work involved and the stupid questions on it. this is our tax dollars at work. Honestly if I am a wanted fugitive running from the law am I really going to say yes when you ask me if I am a wanted fugitive.

Any way rant over on with the review. There are things I love about this gun and a couple things I don't. The gun shoots very nice and I like it a lot. it is very accurate and consistent for the slow shooter. you under no circumstances can spray and prey with this fire arm. It jams quite often if your into shooting fast. The biggest thing I see is the clip is crap with subsonic hollow points. First problem with the clip is it is a 10 round clip that is almost impossible to put 10 rounds in. doesn't matter weather its hollow points or not you have to force the last two rounds in.

We shot Federal copper plated Hollow Point .22 LR 31gr Ammunition from the savage as well as Federal Copper Plated High Velocity 22lr 40Gr. We had jamming problems with both at spray and prey speeds. with the hollow points they were getting stuck in the clip just below the edge. with the standard ammo it was just plain out jamming. the spent cartridges could not seem to get out of the way fast enough. Now I do know that this firearm should improve in time as it is used more and gets broke in more. New Firearms are always a little flaky.

As soon as I got home I threw a cheap red/green dot scope on it. laser bore sighted it at 5 yards with a 1/8 drop for compensation then we headed to the range. First three shots went way high. I mean over the top of the hill we were shooting at high. 12 clicks latter brought us onto the top left hand corner of the paper. It was a matter of a normal sight in from there. Before long we had this baby dead on.

One of the things I like about this gun is its consistency. Every shot went right ware we aimed it. and it being a well balanced low recoil 22lr the recovery time was outstanding. if it even wiggled a little you could put it right back on target with no delays. All thow I must say the trigger pull is pretty hard I am hoping that gets better with time because there are no after market parts for this firearm believe me I looked for almost three days. So in a nut shell below in random order is my likes and dislikes.

LIKES
1: synthetic stock is durable and has a awesome feel
2: consistent
3: fast recovery time
4: push in bolt lock.
5: easy to operate safety
6: Light
7: Well balanced

DISLIKES
1: Hard trigger pull
2: cant shoot fast
3: Clip is crap

So all in all I have to say this is a good gun and let me tell you it will take down a squirrel at 75 yards very easily I usually don't try shots that long with a 22Lr but I wanted to find the limits of this rifle. both times I shot that far with it, the round went right ware I wanted it to allowing me to bring home lunch and supper.

This has been a surreal day. Talk about one of those survival incidents that you never figure is going to happen. I ended up with two fractured ribs today. I went out this morning deer hunting. I pulled up to the trail I like to hunt and was surprised to see no other cars there. I had just put a new scope on my gun the night before and had only bore sighted it. Keep in mind that bore sighting is no substitute for a conventional sighting in, but it gets you on the paper.

So I decided to take a couple of shots at a paint can about 40 yards away. The scope was right on for a 5 yard bore sight a few hours earlier. I cradled my fire arm a started down the trail. I know your saying to your self how dumb to test shoot at the same trail your hunting on. You are partially right. but my hunting spot is about a mile down the trail so there is no real worry's. To be honest This late in the season I never expected to see or get any shots at any thing any way.

So any way. I was maybe 20 to 30 yards down the trail from ware I had shot the paint can. I heard a noise in the leaves and dropped to one knee and pulled up in the direction of the noise. and waited. A cute little black squirrel ran across the trail over to the other side. I kinda chuckled and stood up and took a few more steps. then I heard a lot of noise coming from the direction the squirrel went. I at first took it to be more squirrels but then I started tingling. I dropped to my knee and pulled up again. I stayed at ready for several minutes listing to the noise get closer.

Finally I see the source of the noise. a pretty doe about 150 Pounds was walking threw the woods. from my angel I could not get a heart lung shot but I had a dam clear view of her head. So I took the shot. I caught her just under the right eye on an upwards angel and scrambled her brain. she never felt a thing as she dropped like a rock on the spot. I started to stand up and all the sudden the woods all around me exploded in noise and movement. Next thing I know this brown blur is running into on top of and over me. Yes that is right I got ran over by a white tale and got two fractured ribs out of the deal.

Apparently it was all together three doe a button buck and a fawn. I only know this because my son and wife went back to pick up my deer while I was at the hospital and a guy who lived by the trail said that is what he saw cross the road just shortly before he heard my shot. they had been chased out of the land across the street and right into me. lucky for me my cell was not crushed it was on a inner pocket on the side I got hit on.

Little hint its very hard to talk with broken ribs so for the first time in my life I can honestly say texting came in handy. well off to bed the pain killers are kicking in.

[attachment=45]

Yes for those of you wondering the head is missing and no it wasn't me it was the Michigan DNR. The deer was taken to the check station not to far from ware I hunt and the accident was reported. they took the head to send back to the lab to check the limpnoids and glans for certain illiness.

There are a few ways you can go about this...

The first is the antenna.

A small magnet mount antenna can be purchased at most wal-marts in the automotive department near the car stereo's.

These thread together in a few pieces (base, lower stem, loading coil, whip) so they can easily be stowed in a bag and the stashed in the glove box or console.

Make sure the antenna is assembled and tuned to ultimate efficiency by tuning to lowest possible swr.

Then mark the whip with a permanent marker at the top of the loading coil and disassemble.

On to the radio:

A small inexpensive CB is a midland 1001. These can be purchased for around $40 from various vendors. You can power them of of a cigarette lighter plug.

You could also purchase the 40 channel walkie talkies that allow for external antenna attachment. Many of these offer a cigarette lighter plug.

Now when in an emergency situation you can assemble your antenna, attach it to the rood, attach you radio and be on the air calling for help in under 5 minutes.

They call me MoJo and I am a Electronics Tech from Traverse City, MI. I run a CB shop and CB radios are one of my two main hobbies.

The second is storm chasing. I am a National Weather Service trained and registered storm spotter aka storm chaser. I am the guy on the ground who watches the clouds and when I see things such as wall clouds, funnels, large hail, etc. I call in to the NWS with a report. They then use this info along with radar imagery to plot the storms path and issue the appropriate watch/warning.

I look forward to doing quite a few threads on severe weather spotting and sever weather survival and hope they are of great use to the members here.
